Important flu facts

For most people, the flu is simply a headachein more ways than one. Symptoms can include coughing, fever, sore throat, muscle aches and, in extreme cases, breathing problems and pneumonia. Some groups of people are more at risk than others for these extreme symptoms and other complications. Among these groups are:

  • Adults over 65
  • Pregnant women
  • People who have conditions including the following:

Children over the age of 2 can use the nasal spray form, which grants the same effects without the terror of a needle.The nose is one of the body parts that suffer most during a cold, whether it’s through chapping from frequent blowing or simply because of congestion. Use tissues with lotion to alleviate painful chappingyou can also use petroleum jelly or unscented ointment. Congestion can often be relieved with a combination of nasal saline drops, a cool-mist humidifier, and the famous Vicks VapoRub.Don’t hesitate to treat yourself to a day of rest if you come down with the flu. Bringing your level of activity down will give your body the energy it needs in order to fight off infection. As long as you’ve been conservative with your sick days at work, your boss should understand. While you’re resting, make sure to fill up on fluidsspecifically water or clear juices. Avoid caffeinated drinksthese act as mild diuretics and will severely cramp your style during your day of rest (pun intended).For most cases of the flu, you shouldn’t actually need to call your doctor. If you’re in one of the groups listed above, or experience severe symptoms like trouble breathing, disorientation, or persistent vomiting, however, you should contact a doctor. Likewise, if your symptoms last for more than 10 days, you should seek medical assistance.
